St-Tropez is a commune on the French Riviera in the Var department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in southern France. It sits on a small peninsula that closes the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, with the Massif des Maures behind it. The town is about 68 kilometers west of Nice and about 104 kilometers east of Marseille. The Vieux Port and its lighthouse form the center of town, and the Citadelle on the hill above the old village has views over the town, the gulf and the massif.

People come for the harbor, Pampelonne bay south of town and a glamorous reputation shaped since the 1950s by French New Wave artists, yé-yé singers and jet-setters. Pampelonne has about five kilometers of beaches with beach huts, watersports and beach clubs. Summer is the peak season, when the town swells and the roads fill up, so the best time for a quieter visit is spring or early autumn. Plan at least two days for the harbor, the Citadelle and one beach day.

St-Tropez in five

  1. Take the boat from Sainte-MaximeIn season a short ferry crosses the bay and avoids the road jams. Check the operator and the last return.
  2. Do not drive in July and AugustThe only road onto the peninsula backs up in summer, and parking is scarce. Come early, go by boat or choose shoulder months.
  3. Visit the village before the beach clubsThe harbor, the citadel and the Place des Lices market are the free draw. Beach clubs on Pampelonne are priced for a splash; bring a towel and a plan.
  4. Choose the shoulder seasonMay, June and September have warm water and open restaurants without the peak crowds.Luberon

St-Tropez FAQ

Is St-Tropez worth visiting?

Yes for a day or two, especially outside peak summer. The harbor and the beaches are the reason, and prices are high.

How do you get to St-Tropez without a car?

By bus from Saint-Raphaël or Hyères, or by ferry from Sainte-Maxime in season. There is no train station.

When is the best time to visit St-Tropez?

May, June and September for warm water and calmer roads. July and August are crowded and traffic is heavy.

Can you visit St-Tropez on a budget?

Yes if you stay away from beach clubs, picnic and visit outside peak months. A day by bus from Saint-Raphaël is cheaper than staying in the village.

How many days do you need in St-Tropez?

One day for the village and one beach. Two or three days if you want to explore the Pampelonne beaches and Ramatuelle.
