Cannes is a seaside city on the French Riviera, on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is best known for the Cannes Film Festival, held each May at the Palais des Festivals, and for the Croisette, a palm-lined promenade along the beaches. Behind the seafront, Le Suquet climbs the hill as the old town, with narrow streets, old stone houses and views over the harbor.

A two- to three-day stay fits the old town, the seafront and a boat trip, and a week leaves room for beach time and day trips. Boats leave the old port for the Lérins islands, a short crossing offshore: Sainte-Marguerite has a fort, and Saint-Honorat has an abbey. Spring and early autumn are milder and quieter than July and August, when the beaches and hotels are busiest. Nice is about half an hour away by train, so the two cities are easy to compare as a base.

Cannes FAQ

Is Cannes worth visiting?

Yes for a beach-and-old-town stop of two or three days: the Croisette, Le Suquet and the Lérins islands are easy on foot. It costs more than Nice, so many travelers base in Nice and visit Cannes as a day trip.

How many days do you need in Cannes?

Two days covers the Croisette, Le Suquet and a half-day on an island. Three lets you add Antibes or Grasse. Stay longer only if you plan to use Cannes as a base for the western Riviera.

Is Cannes or Nice better to stay in?

Nice has more sights, a tram from the airport and lower prices. Cannes is calmer, more resort-like and closer to the Lérins islands. The two are about half an hour apart by train.

How do you get from Nice airport to Cannes?

By the regional ZOU! bus (lines 81 and 620 are listed by the airport) or by tram into Nice and a coast train. Allow roughly 45–70 minutes. A taxi is faster but costs much more; check schedules for late arrivals.

Is the Cannes Film Festival open to the public?

Screenings are mostly for accredited guests. Visitors can still see the red-carpet area and the crowds from the street. Check the festival's official site for any public events, and expect high hotel prices and crowded streets in May.
