Nice is a city on the French Riviera, on the Mediterranean coast and backed by the French Alps. It is the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes department and ranks second among French Mediterranean cities by population, behind Marseille. The city is known for the Promenade des Anglais, the seafront along the Baie des Anges, and for the old town's lanes and squares around Place Rossetti. Cours Saleya hosts a daily market with flowers, art and antiques. The local food is Niçois, with socca, pissaladière and salade niçoise.

Nice works well as a base for a few days. Tram line 2 links Nice Côte d'Azur Airport with the city centre, and high-speed TGV trains reach Paris from Nice-Ville in under six hours. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, with July temperatures typically above 26 °C. Winters are mild, and September is still sunny. Two or three days is enough for the old town, the seafront and one day trip.

Nice in five

  2. Pack beach shoesThe city beaches are large pebbles, not sand. Public stretches are free; private beach clubs rent loungers.
  3. Shop the Cours Saleya market in the morningThe flower and produce market in the old town is a morning event, with an antiques market on one weekday. Check the days before you go, since they shift.
  4. Use the coast trains for day tripsRegional trains run along the coast to Villefranche, Monaco and Antibes frequently. For the whole coast, compare train and car.Riviera by train or car

Nice FAQ

How do I get from Nice airport to the city center?

Take tram line 2 from either terminal. It reaches the center in about 25–30 minutes and continues to the port.

Is Nice a good base for the French Riviera?

Yes. It has the main airport and fast coast trains to Monaco, Antibes and Cannes, so you can see the coast without a car.

Does Nice have sandy beaches?

No. The city beaches are pebbles. Villefranche and some beaches near Antibes have sand.

How many days do you need in Nice?

Three days covers the old town, the promenade, the market and one coast day trip. Add a day for Monaco and Èze together.

Is Nice better than Cannes as a base?

For most first trips, yes: Nice has the airport, fast trains in both directions and a real city around you. Cannes is calmer and more resort-like, and suits a festival week or a quiet stay.
