Colline du Château

Visit Colline du Château in Nice for views over Vieux Nice, the Baie des Anges and Port Lympia, plus gardens, ruins and an artificial waterfall.

Colline du Château is a hilltop park between Vieux Nice and Port Lympia, with paths, gardens and remnants of the former citadel. Climb to its viewpoints for broad views over the Baie des Anges, the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town and the port. The park also has an artificial waterfall, children’s play areas and picnic spaces. There is no castle to visit today: Louis XIV ordered the fortress destroyed in 1706. Reach the hill by stairs or elevator, then explore the grounds at your own pace.

A park where the citadel once stood

Colline du Château

The name Colline du Château means Castle Hill, but the fortress that gave it that name is gone. A castle stood here from medieval times, and the site became a military citadel. In 1706, Louis XIV ordered its destruction. Today the hill is a public park, with remnants of the old fortifications among its paths and gardens.

The park occupies a rocky rise between Vieux Nice and the port. Its position explains the appeal of the summit: views open in different directions across the city and coast. Look west towards the Old Town and the Baie des Anges, then turn east towards Port Lympia.

Paths, waterfall and viewpoints

There is more to explore than the main lookout. Walking paths run through green, shaded sections of the hill, past gardens and archaeological remains. The artificial waterfall is another landmark within the park, and several viewpoints give you different angles on Nice’s rooftops, seafront and harbour.

The hill is also set up for a slower visit. Families can use the children’s play areas, while picnic spaces offer a place to pause. A café on the hill is mentioned among the facilities, though refreshments may also be available from kiosks. Bring a snack if you would rather not depend on finding something open.

Getting to the top

You can reach the park on foot from Vieux Nice, using the stairways that climb the hill. The ascent is steep in places, so take your time and carry water in warm weather. An elevator provides an alternative to the stairs, but it is not always operating; check before relying on it. If it is out of service, expect to walk uphill.

Once at the top, allow time to follow the paths to more than one viewpoint. The west-facing lookouts take in the Old Town and coastline, while the port is visible from the eastern side. Visiting near sunset gives you the chance to watch the light change over the city and sea.
