Villefranche-sur-Mer

A small harbor town on the French Riviera with a painted quay, a covered medieval lane and a chapel decorated by Jean Cocteau.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a small harbor town on the Mediterranean coast of France, in the Alpes-Maritimes department, between Nice and Monaco. The harbor is deep and sheltered, and the old town climbs from the water in houses painted pale yellow, pink and ochre. The Rue Obscure, a long covered medieval passage, runs through the old town. Jean Cocteau decorated the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, a former fishermen's chapel on the quay, in 1957.

Visitors come for a day from Nice or stay a night by the water. The coastal line makes the train from Nice the simplest way in. The beaches are small and mostly pebble, and the old town can be walked in a few hours. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, because summer brings heavy crowds to the quay and the narrow lanes. Allow one full day to walk the old town, see the chapel and swim, and add a night if you want the harbor in the evening.

Villefranche-sur-Mer in five

  1. Take the TER, not the car, from NiceThe town's commune says trains stop about every 15 minutes through the day, close to the old town and the beaches. From the airport, tram line 2 and a change to the Ventimiglia line works without going into central Nice.Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer
  2. Walk the Rue Obscure earlyThe 130 m vaulted lane in the old town is free and takes about 10 minutes. It sits on the line of the first rampart, so pair it with the quay and the stairs up from the harbor.
  3. Check the Cocteau chapel hours before you goThe tourist board lists the Chapelle Saint-Pierre open Wednesday to Sunday for 2026, closed from mid-November to mid-December. Confirm the day on the tourist office page, because the chapel is small and has a fee.Villefranche-sur-Mer in one day
  4. Treat the Citadelle as a free walk, not a museum stopThe Citadelle Saint-Elme is free and listed open daily for 2026, but its museum rooms are described as closed for renovation. Go for the ramparts, gardens and view, and check the museum status first.
  5. Look at cruise call days before a quiet visitShips call regularly and the tourist board publishes the call schedule. The quay and the old town fill up on those days, so choose another day for the chapel or a beach morning.Where to stay in Villefranche-sur-Mer
