Grasse is a hill town about 20 km inland from the Côte d'Azur, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur in southeastern France. It sits about 350 m above sea level and is the center of the French perfume industry. Its inland climate is warm and sheltered from sea air, which helped the town become a center of flower farming. Jasmine, rose, lavender, orange blossom and wild mimosa have long been grown here for perfume. About 27 tonnes of jasmine are harvested here each year.

Visitors come for the perfumery tours, the International Perfume Museum, which traces about 5,000 years of perfumery, and the old town with its cathedral. Three perfumeries, Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard, open to the public with free tours, and some let you make your own scent. Grasse station has trains to Cannes, Nice and Ventimiglia. The Fête du Jasmin takes place at the start of August, and an international rose exhibition, Expo Rose, is held every May.

Grasse FAQ

Is Grasse worth visiting?

Yes if you like perfume or want a break from the coast. The old town is small and charming, and a workshop is the main reason to come. Skip it if you want beaches.

How long do you need in Grasse?

Half a day covers the old town, a perfumery visit or the museum. A full day lets you add a workshop and lunch. Stay overnight only for the harvest season.

How do you get from Nice to Grasse?

By bus in about an hour, or by train to Cannes and a regional train on to Grasse. Check the current timetables on the regional transport sites.

Is Grasse a day trip from Cannes?

Yes. Regional trains take about 30 minutes, which makes it an easy half-day or day trip. Check the last train back before you plan an evening.

When is the best time to visit Grasse?

May for the rose harvest and late summer for jasmine, though dates depend on the year. Spring and autumn are quieter than July and August on the coast.
