Toulon is a port city on the Mediterranean coast in the Var department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in southern France. It is the main base of the French Navy's Mediterranean fleet, so warships are a regular sight in the harbor. The old town sits close to the water. The covered Provençal market near the port is the place to see local produce and fish in the morning.

Mont Faron, the hill above the city, has a cable car to the summit with views over the harbor and the bay. The top also holds a museum on the Allied landings in Provence in 1944. Toulon suits travelers who want a working city by the sea, or who plan to use it as a base for the Var coast and the islands. Spring and early fall are the most comfortable seasons; July and August are hot and busy. Plan one or two days for the city itself, and add more if you take day trips.

Toulon FAQ

Is Toulon worth visiting?

As a stop, yes: the market and Mont Faron are good. It is not a classic beauty, but it is practical and less expensive than neighbors.

How do you get to Porquerolles from Toulon?

Take a train or bus to Hyères or the Giens peninsula, then a ferry. Boats do not usually leave from central Toulon.

How many days do you need in Toulon?

One day for the market, harbor and Mont Faron. Add days for islands or the coast.

Does Toulon have beaches?

Yes, the Mourillon beaches lie east of the port. The nicer sand is around Hyères and the Giens peninsula, a short train or bus ride away.

Is Toulon a good base for the Riviera?

It is cheaper than Nice or Cannes and well connected, but it lacks beaches near the center.
