Cassis is a coastal commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in southern France. It sits on the Mediterranean about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) east of Marseille, along the coast often called the French Riviera. The town is known for its sheltered rocky inlets, called calanques, and its high sea cliffs. Cap Canaille climbs to 394 meters (1,293 feet) between Cassis and La Ciotat and ranks among Europe's tallest sea cliffs.

The Ligures first lived on the site between 600 and 500 BC and put a fortified settlement on Baou Redon. Starting in the 1700s, houses spread beyond the old walls near the harbor. Cassis wine is known for its white and rosé, and in 1936 the town's wine was among the first three wine areas to earn the AOC label. Crème de cassis is a Burgundy blackcurrant liqueur, named for the fruit, so do not confuse it with the local wine. A day covers the harbor and one calanque, while two or three days fit a boat trip and a winery visit.

Cassis FAQ

Is Cassis worth visiting?

Yes, for the harbor, the wine and the calanques. It is small and busy in summer, so a day or two in spring or early autumn is easier.

How do you get from Marseille to Cassis?

By regional train in about 20–30 minutes to Cassis station, then a bus or taxi about 3 km to the village. Check the bus timetable.

Can you visit the calanques from Cassis in summer?

Yes, but access to some coves is limited by reservation or closed on high-fire-risk days. Check the official park and prefecture sites on the day.

How many days do you need in Cassis?

One day covers the harbor and a boat trip. Two days let you add a calanque hike and a wine tasting.

Is Cassis or Marseille a better base for the Calanques?

Cassis is smaller and nearer the first coves; Marseille has more hotels, trains and food. Many travelers base in Marseille and visit Cassis for a day.
