Copenhagen is Denmark's capital and largest city, mostly on the eastern coast of Zealand, with parts on Amager. It sits across the Øresund strait from Malmö in Sweden, and a bridge has linked the two cities by rail and road since 2000. Most visitors start in the old harbor district, where the colorful 17th- and 18th-century houses along Nyhavn now hold restaurants and bars. Bike paths run along most streets, so a bike is the simplest way to cover the center.

Amalienborg Palace, the royal residence, stands in the Frederiksstaden district, and Rosenborg Castle holds the Danish crown jewels. Tivoli Gardens in Vesterbro has fairground rides, a pantomime theatre, a concert hall and restaurants. For sunshine, July is the sunniest and warmest month, with average daytime highs of 21 °C, while November to February brings under two hours of sun a day.

How many days do I need in Copenhagen?

Three days covers the center, a museum or two, Tivoli in season and one district by bike. Add a day for Louisiana or Kronborg.

Can you swim in Copenhagen harbor?

Yes, at the harbor baths such as Islands Brygge, which have lifeguards in summer. Swim only at the marked spots.

When is the best time to visit Copenhagen?

May to August has long days, harbor swimming and Tivoli's summer season. December is the month for Christmas markets, and January and February are dark, cold and quiet.
