Superkilen Park

Explore Superkilen Park in Copenhagen's Nørrebro district, with three distinct areas, cultural design details, playgrounds and space to skate or picnic.

Superkilen is a long public park in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, divided into red, black and green areas. Its design brings together objects and ideas from the many cultures represented in the neighborhood, including a Moroccan fountain and swings from Iraq. Walk or cycle the route to see how each section changes character: the Red Square is geared toward activity, the Black Market has places to gather, and the Green Park has grassy space for picnics. Skateboarding, playgrounds and unusual backdrops for photos add reasons to linger.

Three areas, three different uses

Superkilen runs through Nørrebro as a sequence of three color-coded spaces. The Red Square is associated with recreation and city life; the Black Market is a place to sit and meet; and the Green Park has grass for sports and picnics. Together, they combine routes for walking and cycling with places to play, exercise and spend time outdoors.

The sections are useful to keep in mind as you explore. They are not interchangeable lawns: the colors, surfaces and activities give each area its own feel. You can follow the route through all three, stopping where the setting or activity suits you.

Design drawn from many places

Objects and design details from around the world are part of the park's response to the cultural mix of Nørrebro. Look for a fountain from Morocco and swings from Iraq among the international references. Other reported details include palm trees associated with China and English-style rubbish bins. The collection turns a walk through the park into a chance to notice how familiar public-space features can take different forms.

The project was developed by the architecture group BIG, landscape architects Topotek1 and the art group Superflex. Its design was connected to an urban regeneration project and shaped with input from the local community. The aim was to make a shared public space that speaks to the many nationalities living in the area.

Activities along the route

Superkilen works for more than a walk. The park has playgrounds, exercise equipment, cycle paths, a skateboarding area and facilities for sports including basketball, volleyball and tennis. A bike route crosses the space, and the park's shaped paths and hills provide a more varied ride than a simple straight crossing.

Families can use the play areas while older children and adults head for the skate and sports facilities. The park is also a place to sit outdoors or take photos of its bold surfaces and installations. If you use a wheelchair, access is available, though the play equipment is limited for disabled visitors.

Getting there and spending time nearby

The park is at Nørrebrogade 210 in the Nørrebro district. Cycling is a practical way to reach it and move between its sections; visitors have ridden from the city on rented bikes. You can also combine a visit with time in the surrounding neighborhood, where the park is used as a meeting place by local residents.

Nørrebro Park is nearby and is noted for cherry blossoms during the season. Treat that as a separate stop: the blossoms are associated with that neighboring park, not with Superkilen itself. Superkilen is open around the clock, so you can fit a walk or cycle through it into your day without planning around a closing time.
