Boston is the capital of Massachusetts, on the Atlantic coast of the northeastern United States. Many of its best-known sites date to the colonial period and the American Revolution. The Freedom Trail is a marked route of about 2.5 miles through downtown. A red line painted on the sidewalk guides you from Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, passing historic sites along the way.
Boston suits first-time visitors who want to walk and see history, universities and sports on one trip. Harvard is across the Charles River in Cambridge, and Fenway Park sits a short ride west of downtown. The city is compact, but where you sleep still decides how much of each day goes to getting around. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for walking. Two to three days is enough for the core sights at an easy pace.

How many days do you need in Boston?
Two full days cover the Freedom Trail, Back Bay and one museum or Cambridge. Three days add Fenway or the Seaport and a half-day trip. Four or more makes sense if you add Salem or Cape Cod.
Is Boston walkable?
Yes. The Freedom Trail, North End, Beacon Hill and Back Bay are all within walking distance of each other. Use the T for Cambridge, Fenway and the airport.
Where should I stay in Boston for the first time?
Back Bay for a central, polished base, or downtown and the waterfront for the Freedom Trail and North End. Cambridge is calmer and cheaper but farther from the main sights.
Is Boston expensive?
Hotels are among the priciest in the US in peak weeks such as graduations and fall foliage. Book early, check rates for midweek stays and consider Cambridge or hotels just outside the center.
Do I need a car in Boston?
No. Parking is costly and streets are tight. The subway, buses and commuter rail cover most trips, and a rental car only helps for Cape Cod or Maine.
