Providence is the capital of Rhode Island, on the Narragansett Bay coast. Two things bring people here: WaterFire, when braziers are lit along the downtown rivers on scheduled evenings, and the RISD Museum, run by the Rhode Island School of Design. Federal Hill, the Italian-American neighborhood west of downtown, is where to go for dinner and an unplanned walk.
The downtown core and the College Hill campuses are close enough to walk in a day. Trains from Boston and New York reach the city, so it works best as a one- or two-night stop. Check the WaterFire schedule before you lock in other dates, since the lit evenings set the rest of your plan. Give one evening to the fires and one day to College Hill and the rivers. Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable window for walking outdoors.

What is WaterFire in Providence?
A public art installation of bonfires on the rivers, lit from sunset on scheduled dates through the season. Full lightings are the big nights. Dates and weather cancellations are posted on waterfire.org.
Is Providence worth visiting?
Yes, as a compact city for design, food and the RISD Museum, with fewer crowds than Boston. It suits one or two nights, ideally including a WaterFire evening.
How do you get from Boston to Providence without a car?
Take the MBTA Providence/Stoughton Line from South Station, or Amtrak. Both stop at Providence station, which is a short walk from downtown and about 0.4 miles from the RISD Museum.
Is the RISD Museum free?
On Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m., yes. Otherwise adults pay $22, and anyone 18 and under is free. The museum is closed on a handful of holidays.
When is the best time to visit Providence?
May to June and September to October have mild weather and the WaterFire season. July and August can be humid. Winters are cold, with snow most likely from January to March.
