Tongatapu is the main island of Tonga, in the southern island group of the kingdom, and the most populous. The island is the country's center for business, trade and labor, and its capital is Nukuʻalofa. Development moves faster here than on the other islands. Most of the land is flat coral limestone, covered with fertile soil made from volcanic ash blown from neighboring volcanoes.

The south coast is steep, rising to about 35 meters on average and up to 70 meters, then slopes lower toward the north, with small islands and reefs up to 7 kilometers offshore. The Fanga'uta and Fangakakau Lagoons, lined with mangroves, were declared a Natural Reserve in 1974 and serve as a breeding ground for birds and fish. The island ranks among the richest places in the Pacific for archaeological remains, such as early Lapita pottery sites. Muʻa, the former capital, has more than 20 royal grave mounds, and Langi holds the tombs of Tongan kings. The cooler, drier months from June to September are the most comfortable time to visit.
