Nuku'alofa is the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, on the north coast of Tongatapu, the largest island in the group. The town is small enough to walk, with government offices, markets, churches and a waterfront. Many international flights land at Fua'amotu International Airport, a drive from town.

The royal palace stands near the waterfront, which makes the town the seat of the monarchy. It also works as a base for the Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, a stone gateway at Mu'a on the east side of the island. Many shops and offices close on Sundays, so plan supplies for Saturday, and dress modestly in town and in villages. The dry season, May to October, is the most comfortable time to visit. Two to three days on Tongatapu suits most trips, and the outer island groups need more time.
