Taipei is Taiwan's capital, in the north of the island. The city sits in a basin ringed by hills and mountains, with the Danshui River along its western edge. People come for the food, the night markets and the mix of old temples and modern towers. Shilin Night Market is one of the largest in the city, and Longshan Temple in Wanhua dates to 1738.
Beitou, at the end of a metro line, has hot spring baths and a museum on the area's hot spring history. The National Palace Museum holds one of the largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts. Plan three to four days for the main sights, or a week if you want a day trip to Jiufen or Yangmingshan National Park. March to May and October to November are the mildest months. Summer is hot and humid, and typhoons can disrupt travel from roughly June into early autumn.

How many days do you need in Taipei?
Three days cover the old city, a night market, Taipei 101 and Beitou. Add a fourth for a day trip to Jiufen or the Pingxi line, and more for Tainan or the east coast.
How do I get from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei?
Take the Airport MRT express to Taipei Main Station in about 35 to 40 minutes. A commuter train stops at every station and takes longer, and buses and taxis run all hours.
What is the best area to stay in Taipei?
Zhongshan for a first trip, Da'an for food and quiet streets, Ximending for value. Stay near an MRT station in all cases, since the metro is how you will move.
When do the Taipei night markets open?
Most start in the late afternoon and fill up after dark, with the busiest hours around evening. Carry cash for stalls, and go hungry.
Is Taipei safe at night?
Generally yes: streets and the MRT are busy late and violent crime is low. Use normal city sense with bags, and check typhoon warnings in summer.
