Taichung is a major city on the western plain of central Taiwan, between the Taiwan Strait and the mountains. It works as a base for a few days, with the city as the main stop and the surrounding region within reach. The National Taichung Theater is the city's best-known building, with a curving, wave-like design. Miyahara, a neighborhood of older streets and independent shops, is a good place to spend an afternoon on foot.
Plan two days for the city itself, or stay longer to make day trips. Sun Moon Lake, in Nantou County, is a popular day trip, and the coastal Gaomei Wetlands offer a flatter, quieter outing. Fengjia Night Market stays busy into the evening, and its food stalls are a reason to stay past dinner. Late autumn through spring suits the trip best, when the weather is cooler and walking is easier.

How many days do you need in Taichung?
Two days cover the Miyahara district, a museum, the National Taichung Theater area and an evening out. Add a third day for Sun Moon Lake, the Gaomei Wetlands or Lukang, each of which needs most of a day.
How do you get from THSR Taichung to the city center?
The THSR page lists Taichung MRT, city buses and taxis at the station, plus a corridor from Exit 3 on 2F to Taiwan Railways Xinwuri Station. Check the current MRT and bus options on the day, since the station sits in Wuri District outside the center.
Is Taichung worth visiting?
Yes, as a midpoint on the west-coast line. It has an old center around Miyahara, a large natural science museum, modern architecture and easy day trips. It suits travelers who want a calmer city than Taipei.
What is there to do in Taichung when it rains?
The National Museum of Natural Science is a six-venue complex on 22 acres with an IMAX theater and more than 30 permanent exhibit areas, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is downtown. Keep the wetlands for a clear evening.
Can you visit Sun Moon Lake from Taichung in a day?
Yes. Sun Moon Lake lies in Nantou County at 748 m and is Taiwan's only large natural lake, per the Tourism Administration. Check bus or tour options and leave early, since the lake sights are spread around the shore.
