Wuling Farm

Wuling Farm in Taichung's mountains: cherry blossoms from February to March, red maples from mid-November to mid-January, and clam noodles on site.

Wuling Farm is a recreational farm in the mountains of Taichung, set in a valley where the Qijiawan River runs past. It is known for cherry blossoms in late winter, red maples and golden ginkgoes in autumn, and fruit picking from July to October. Fresh air, mountain views and wildlife make it a good place for a slow day, and the clam noodles served on site are a draw in their own right. The drive up is long and winding, so plan for it.

Where the farm sits

Wuling Farm

Wuling Farm lies in Pingdeng Village, in Heping District of Taichung, among high mountains and lush forest. The entrance road drops down into a valley, and at its base a side valley opens out where the Qijiawan River runs clear over its stones. The farm's buildings sit in this valley.

The farm has earned the nickname Taiwan Jiuzhaigou for its red maples. It was once known as the Wuling Forest Recreational Area. It is one of the few places where the endangered Formosan landlocked salmon can be spotted in the wild.

The farm also has a Japanese pinewood lane. On a visit in autumn, the cedar scent along it was strong.

Seasons on the grounds

Spring brings cherry blossoms. The main variety is a pale pink crimson, with some yaezakura and an occasional white kirishezakura. The most eye-catching trees are the Pink Beauty flowers, which bloom in early spring. The cherry blossom season runs from February to March.

Fruit trees come into fruit from July to October, when the first ripe fruit is ready to pick. In September, dainty cosmos flowers fill the farm before the autumn colours arrive.

In autumn, the maples turn fiery red around the visitor centre area, and ginkgoes turn gold near the entrance. The peach orchard is also part of the autumn view. The maple season runs from mid-November to mid-January. Early in the season, the farm can be less crowded than in cherry blossom season.

Getting there and getting around

The drive from Taipei is long and serpentine. Many visitors plan a day trip, and the round trip from Taipei can take about seven hours. Staying overnight on the farm spares the return drive on the same day.

The buildings and attractions are spread out, and the walks between them can be long. A car or scooter is useful for moving across the site. There are free and paid parking lots, and the entrance and parking area are wheelchair accessible.

The grounds are open around the clock, so you can visit at dawn or after dark. Most visitors on tour buses are Chinese-speaking, and English translation is limited, so it helps to plan ahead with written notes or a translation app.

Where to stay and eat

The farm has cabins and camping spots. Cabin rooms have folding mattresses with clean sheets and duvets. There is no air conditioning, but a heater is provided. Some stays include a simple Chinese buffet for breakfast and dinner.

The clam noodles are the dish to order. The clams are free of grit, the broth is seafood-based with broccoli stems for a natural sweetness, and the bowl is finished with fried shallots. Mung bean sprouts add crunch. Portions of clams are generous.

There are tea houses and restaurants on the site for a sit-down stop. When the weather is fine, a picnic is a good alternative to paying restaurant prices.
