Malmö is the main city of Skåne, the southernmost region of Sweden, and the Swedish end of the Öresund Bridge. Copenhagen is a direct train ride away. You can base yourself in Malmö and visit Denmark for a day, or stay in Copenhagen and come over for the day. The old core sits near Malmöhus Castle and the harbor. Västra Hamnen, a former shipyard district, now has newer housing, parks and the Turning Torso tower.

A Malmö trip suits a city break or a slow weekend better than a long sightseeing list. Most sights are within walking distance, from the castle grounds to the harbor promenade. Late spring to early autumn is the best time for the waterfront and outdoor cafés. Plan two to three days, and add a day for Copenhagen if you want to see both cities.

Malmö FAQ

Is Malmö worth visiting or should you just see Copenhagen?

Malmö is worth one or two days for the castle, the harbor and a more relaxed pace. If you only have one day for the region, Copenhagen has the bigger sights, and Malmö suits an overnight.

Do you need a passport to go from Copenhagen to Malmö?

Carry valid ID. Swedish police can run border control on arrivals from Denmark, and on Öresund trains it usually takes place at Hyllie, the first Swedish station. Non-EU visitors also come under EES and the 90 in 180 rule.

How do you get from Copenhagen Airport to Malmö?

Take an Öresund train from the airport station. Ticket machines stand at Copenhagen Airport, and Öresundståg does not sell tickets on board, so buy before boarding or use an app.

Is Malmö Airport close to the city?

No. Swedavia says Malmö Airport is 30 km from Malmö, with a Flygbussarna coach from Malmö C. Copenhagen Airport by train is the alternative.

When are Malmö's museums closed?

Malmö Museer is closed on Mondays except during school holidays, and on 1 January, 1 May, Midsummer Eve and Day, and 24, 25 and 31 December. Thursday hours run to 19:00.
