Malmö Castle is a Renaissance fortress on an island near Malmö station, built on the remains of an older fort and rebuilt in the mid-1500s. It now houses museums of art and natural history, an aquarium and a history display on the city. The art rooms hold modern exhibitions, paintings, sculptures and mixed media, with works by Carl Fredrik Hill. Water surrounds the walls, and the basement dungeon, with its small holding cells and wall of prisoner photos, is one of the most striking rooms in the building.
From a 1434 fort to the mid-1500s castle

King Erik of Denmark had a fort built on this site in 1434. After it was destroyed in a civil war, it was rebuilt in its present form in the mid-1500s. The architect Marten Bassett designed it in the Continental European style of Danish-Italian fortresses.
The castle has been a museum since 1937, and it is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. Over the centuries it has been a fortress, a royal residence, a prison and a barracks, and it passed between Danish and Swedish rule.
