Gothenburg (Göteborg) is Sweden's second-largest city, on the west coast by the Kattegat, about 400 km from Stockholm. It lies on both sides of the Göta älv river mouth, with Hisingen on the north side. King Gustavus Adolphus granted the charter in 1621, and Dutch engineers drained the marshy site and laid out canals and straight streets. The port is the largest in the Nordic region, and Volvo was founded here in 1927.

Go for the wooden houses and cafés of Haga, where the Haga bulle cinnamon roll is served, the indoor fish market at Feskekörka, and the tram network that covers most of the city. Ferries from Saltholmen reach the southern archipelago, including Vinga and Styrsö. Liseberg, Scandinavia's largest amusement park by number of rides, is in the central city. Landvetter airport is about 20 km east of the centre, and Flygbussarna buses take 20 to 30 minutes. Summers run warm and long, from about 13 May to 4 October, so late spring to early autumn is the best time to visit.

Gothenburg FAQ

Is Gothenburg worth visiting?

Yes, for a slower Swedish city break with seafood, canals and trams, and islands a short ferry ride away. Two days is enough for most visitors.

Can I use public transport tickets on Gothenburg's ferries?

Yes. Västtrafik tickets cover the ferries from Saltholmen to the southern archipelago as well as the trams and buses.

How do I get from Landvetter Airport to Gothenburg?

Airport buses run to the center and Centralstationen in about 30 minutes. There is no train to the airport.

Can you swim around Gothenburg?

Yes, in summer from rocks and small beaches on the southern archipelago islands. The sea stays cool, so June to August is the real swimming window.

Do I need a car in Gothenburg?

No. Trams, buses and ferries cover the city and the southern islands. A car helps mainly for the Bohuslän coast beyond Marstrand, where buses are sparse.
