Palafrugell is a town in the province of Girona, in northeastern Catalonia, on the northern Costa Brava. The name also covers the seaside villages of Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu, and each one has its own small beach in a cove. The inland town is known for cork production, and the Museu del Suro covers that trade.

The coast is the main reason to go. A coast path links the villages, so you can walk between coves instead of driving. Choosing a base among the three villages is the first decision, and the path makes it easier to spend time in each. The area suits couples and families who want small beaches and short walks. Summer is the busiest and warmest season, while late spring and early autumn are quieter for walking and swimming.

Palafrugell in five

  1. Fly into Girona or BarcelonaGirona-Costa Brava airport is nearer, about 45 minutes by road, while Barcelona has more routes and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Compare fares, then choose a transfer or a rental car.
  2. Walk the Camí de Ronda between the covesThe coast path links Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu, and each stretch takes under an hour on foot. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and expect steps and uneven rock.
  3. Choose Calella, Llafranc or TamariuCalella has whitewashed arches and a lively evening, Llafranc has a longer family beach, and Tamariu is the quietest cove. Each is a few minutes apart, so base where you want to eat and swim.
  4. Book July and August earlyHotels and apartments in the coves fill months ahead, and the havaneres song evening in Calella in early July is a draw. May, June and September are calmer, with warmer sea in September.
  5. Rent a car, or use summer busesLocal buses link the coves and Palafrugell town in season, but a car is the easier way to reach Begur, Pals and the inland villages. Parking in the coves is tight in July and August.

Palafrugell FAQ

Where should you stay in Palafrugell?

Calella for atmosphere and evenings, Llafranc for a family beach, Tamariu for quiet, or Palafrugell town for value. The coves are close, so you can visit the others on foot or by bus.

How do you get to Calella de Palafrugell from Barcelona?

By bus in about 2 hours, or by car in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no train to the coast, and many visitors fly into Girona instead, which is closer.

Can you walk between Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu?

Yes, along the Camí de Ronda. Each stretch takes under an hour, but the path has steps and uneven rock, so wear proper shoes and carry water.

What is the best time to visit Palafrugell?

June and September for warm days and open restaurants without peak crowds. May suits walking, while July and August are the busiest, and winter is quiet with many places closed.

Do you need a car in Palafrugell?

Not for a week in one cove, because the beaches are close and summer buses run. A car helps for Begur, Pals and inland villages, but parking is hard in July and August.
