Tossa de Mar is a seaside town on the Costa Brava, on the Catalan coast of northeastern Spain. Its walled old quarter, Vila Vella, sits on a rocky headland above the bay, with medieval walls and towers still standing around it. Below, a curved sandy beach, Platja Gran, runs along the bay, and smaller coves lie on either side of the town.

Go for a beach stay with the historic core within walking distance, or for coastal paths between small beaches. Summer is the busiest season for swimming. Late spring and early autumn are milder and quieter. Stay at least one night so you can walk the old walls after the day-trip visitors leave. There is no train to Tossa, so buses from Barcelona and Girona are the usual way in.

Tossa de Mar FAQ

Is Tossa de Mar worth visiting?

Yes, for the walled old town above the sea and the coves. It is smaller and quieter than Lloret de Mar next door, but busy in July and August.

How do you get to Tossa de Mar from Barcelona?

Take a direct coach, about 1.5 hours. There is no train, so a car or the bus is needed, and summer service is more frequent.

How many days do you need in Tossa de Mar?

One day covers the Vila Vella and the beach. Two or three days let you walk the coastal paths and visit the coves.

Is Tossa de Mar good for a day trip?

Yes, though a night gives you quieter streets after the day-trippers leave. A coach from Barcelona makes the day possible but long.

When is the best time to visit Tossa de Mar?

June and September for warm sea and fewer crowds. July and August are busy, and winter is quiet with many places closed.
