Cadaqués is a whitewashed fishing village on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, close to the French border. The old town wraps around a small bay, with narrow lanes, white houses and boats pulled up on the shore. Salvador Dalí lived at nearby Portlligat, and his house-museum there is the main reason many visitors come. Past the village, the Cap de Creus natural park has dry, rocky coves and cliffs, and the cape is the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula.

Cadaqués suits travelers who like rocky coves more than long sandy beaches. Two or three nights gives time for the old town, the Dalí house and a walk on the cape. Summer brings the most visitors, so spring and autumn are easier for walking and parking. Figueres, Dalí's hometown, and Girona are both within a drive, so either can be added to the trip.

Cadaqués in five

  1. Book Dalí's house at Portlligat aheadThe painter's house-museum in Portlligat is visited on timed, small-group slots. Book on the official site before you travel, since summer slots can sell out.
  2. Take the coach or arrive earlyA winding road leads in, and parking is tight on summer weekends. Coaches from Figueres and Barcelona save the drive, or arrive before 10am.
  3. Walk out to Cap de CreusCoastal paths lead to the Cap de Creus lighthouse through bare rock and low scrub. There is little shade, so start early in summer and carry water.
  4. Expect the tramuntana windA strong northerly wind blows through the area on many days and can close boat trips. Check the forecast before booking, and pack a windproof layer.Costa Brava

Cadaqués FAQ

Is Cadaqués worth visiting?

Yes for the village, the rocky coves and the Dalí link. It is a slow, scenic stop rather than a big-sights destination, and the winding road is part of the cost.

How do you get to Cadaqués?

By coach from Figueres or Barcelona, or by car from Girona or the border area. There is no train station, and parking is hard in summer, so arrive early.

Can you visit Cadaqués as a day trip?

Yes from Figueres, Girona or Barcelona, but the drive takes a while. Stay a night if you want quiet evenings, Dalí's house and a walk to Cap de Creus.

When is the best time to visit Cadaqués?

May, June, September and October for warm days, calmer crowds and clear walking. July and August are hot and packed, and the wind can blow in any month.

Do you need to book Dalí's house in Portlligat?

Yes. Visits run on timed slots for small groups, and summer tickets sell out. Book on the official site and check opening days before planning your route.
