Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà county in the Girona region of Catalonia, in northeast Spain, close to the French border. It is the birthplace of the painter Salvador Dalí, and the Dalí Theatre and Museum is the main reason to visit. Dalí designed the building himself and was buried under its dome in 1989, as he had asked. The museum began as a 19th-century theatre and keeps the Gorgot tower, the only surviving part of the old town walls. Beside it stands the Torre Galatea, where Dalí spent his last years and which now houses offices of the Gala-Dalí Foundation.
Sant Ferran Castle is the other major sight, a pentagonal fortress with a perimeter of about 5.6 km and one of the largest fortified complexes in the world. Smaller museums cover toys, technology and clocks. From Barcelona, AVE high-speed trains reach Figueres in about 53 minutes, which makes a day trip practical. The tramuntana, a cold dry north wind, is strongest from November to March, when gusts can top 100 km/h. Plan one full day for the Dalí museum and the castle, or two if you add Girona or the Costa Brava coast.
