Menorca

Menorca is a Balearic island known for turquoise coves, a coast path that circles the shore, and two harbor towns, Maó and Ciutadella. Beach days and walking are the reasons to go.

Menorca is the northernmost of the Balearic Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Mediterranean. Flights from Barcelona take about an hour. The island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and visitors come for its turquoise coves on the south coast and the Camí de Cavalls, a path that follows the coastline around the island. Maó, on a deep natural harbor on the east side, and Ciutadella, on the west, are the two main towns.

Menorca suits beach and walking trips. Many south-coast coves are easiest to reach by rental car, while the coast path lets you walk between some beaches. Where you sleep changes the trip: Maó puts you near the harbor, and Ciutadella has the old town. Swimming is best from late spring to early autumn, and July and August bring the most visitors to the coves.

Menorca in five

  1. Rent a car, and book it with the flightsBuses link Maó, Ciutadella and some resorts, but most coves and trailheads are far easier by car. Summer supply is limited, so reserve the car when you book flights or the ferry. How to get to Menorca
  2. Reach south-coast coves earlyCala en Turqueta's free car park is limited and the barrier closes when it is full; a public bus runs from Ciutadella. Arrive early, walk in and carry water, because there is little shade.
  3. Walk part of the Camí de CavallsThe 185 km coast path (GR 223) circles the island in 20 marked stages of about 5 to 13 km, so you can walk a stretch between two coves in a morning. Use sturdy shoes and avoid midday in summer.
  4. Split the stay between two basesCiutadella in the west and Maó in the east are about 45 minutes apart by road. Spending nights at both, or on the south coast, saves daily driving.Where to stay in Menorca
  5. Visit from May to October, not winterMany hotels, beach bars and boat trips close between about November and March, and the sea is cold. Check that your base is open before you book a shoulder-season trip.

Menorca FAQ

Is Menorca worth visiting?

Yes if you want calm beaches, a biosphere-reserve coast and walking more than nightlife. It is less developed than Mallorca or Ibiza, but it needs a car and an early start to reach the best coves in summer.

How many days do you need in Menorca?

Four to five days cover Ciutadella, Maó and several coves on both coasts. A long weekend is enough for one base and the south-coast beaches. Add days for sections of the Camí de Cavalls.

Do you need a car in Menorca?

Yes for most trips. Buses cover the main roads and some resorts, but the best coves, trailheads and viewpoints sit down narrow lanes. Taxis cost a lot over island distances.

Is Menorca better than Mallorca?

Menorca is quieter and smaller with fewer big resorts, while Mallorca has more variety, mountains and a big city in Palma. Choose Menorca for coves and calm, Mallorca for range and easier flights.

What is the best month to visit Menorca?

June and September for warm sea and fewer crowds, May for walking and October for quiet days if the sea is still fine. July and August are hot and full, and most things close in winter.
