Ciutadella is a town on the west coast of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It was the island's capital until the government moved to Mahón, and the old town still shows that past in its narrow streets, arcaded stone buildings and a cathedral near the center. Most visitors come for the harbor, where seafood restaurants line the water and evenings are spent outside.

The south coast is a short drive away and has sheltered coves with clear water. A rental car makes them easier to reach, and the drive is short enough to fit into a day at the beach. Ciutadella suits a trip of two or three days, with one evening by the harbor and one day on the coast. Late spring through early autumn is the season for swimming. Late June brings the Sant Joan festival, a horse celebration with riders in the streets.

Ciutadella in five

  1. Reserve harbor dinners in summerThe port fills in the evening, so reserve ahead or arrive when kitchens open. Seafood is the draw and menus move with the catch.
  2. Rent a car for the covesThe south-coast beaches are reached by narrow country roads and small lots. Limited parking in high season means you should arrive early and check the island's current access rules.Compare rental cars
  3. Time the June festivalThe Sant Joan horse festival around June 23 and 24 fills the old town with riders and crowds. Book rooms and parking early, or avoid those days if you want quiet.
  4. Decide between Ciutadella and the eastCiutadella suits old-town evenings and the west coast. Maó on the east side is the other main base, with a long natural harbor and a ferry port.Menorca
  5. Add a ferry day to MallorcaFerries and fast boats connect Menorca with Mallorca on seasonal timetables. Treat it as a separate trip, not a casual detour.Eastern Mallorca

Ciutadella FAQ

Is Ciutadella worth visiting?

Yes, as a base or a full day trip. The old town and harbor are the most atmospheric on Menorca, and the southern beaches are close enough for a swim in the afternoon.

How many days do you need in Ciutadella?

Two days covers the old town, the harbor and one beach. With a car, three or four days lets you work through the southern coves and the Cami de Cavalls coast path.

Should I stay in Ciutadella or Maó?

Ciutadella if you want old-town evenings and the west and south beaches. Maó if you want a bigger harbor and easy access to the east. Many trips split the stay.

Do I need a car in Ciutadella?

For the old town, no. For the best beaches and lighthouses, yes, because buses are infrequent and some coves are far from stops. Book a car early for July and August.

When is the best time to visit Ciutadella?

Late May, June and September for warm days and thinner crowds. July and August are the busiest, and Sant Joan around June 23 and 24 draws the largest festival crowds.
