Alcúdia is a resort and municipality on the north-east coast of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. Many visitors come for the old town, which sits on a small peninsula between the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia. Its medieval wall, built from 1298 and finished in 1362, can be climbed and followed almost all the way around. Inside are houses dating back to the 13th century, and the Roman remains of Pollentia lie just outside the walls. The town has been listed among Spain's Pueblos Más Bonitos since 2019.
The beach is the other draw. A beach about 14 km long runs from Alcúdia past Port d'Alcúdia to Ca'n Picafort. Coves and beaches north and west of town, including the one facing the islet of S'Illot, suit sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. Most hotels are in Port d'Alcúdia and Platja d'Alcúdia, and many restaurants in Port d'Alcúdia open only in the tourist season. Playa de Muro, which joins Alcúdia, borders S'Albufera, a natural park popular with birdwatchers.
Alcúdia in five
- Pick the port or the old townPort d'Alcúdia has the beach, hotels and restaurants; the walled old town has lanes, a market and fewer hotels. They are a short bus or bike ride apart, so choose by how you spend evenings.
- Go on market daysThe old town hosts a big market on Tuesdays and Sundays, and the lanes are busiest then. Arrive early to avoid parking trouble and the midday heat.
- Hire a car for Formentor and the northCap de Formentor, Pollença and the coves are slow by bus. Collect a car at Palma airport, about an hour away, and drive the Formentor road before the afternoon traffic.Pollença travel guide
- Check the Balearic tourist taxMallorca charges a sustainable tourism tax per person per night, which your hotel adds to the bill. Check the current rates when you book.Tourist taxes in Europe

Is Alcúdia a good base on Mallorca?
Yes for families and cyclists: a long, shallow beach, an old town and the north in easy reach. It is far from Palma and the south coast, so choose another base if you want nightlife or Tramuntana hiking.
Alcúdia or Pollença: which is better?
Alcúdia for a bigger beach and more hotels; Pollença for a calmer stone town and the Formentor road. They are 15–20 minutes apart, so you can stay in one and visit the other.
How do you get from Palma airport to Alcúdia?
By rental car, transfer or bus in roughly an hour. Check bus timetables for late arrivals, since service thins out in the evening and a taxi may cost more.
When is the best time to visit Alcúdia?
May, June, September and October for warm sea, quieter beaches and cycling weather. July and August are hot and busy, and many places close from November to March.
Is Alcúdia good for families?
Yes, the bay has long, gently sloping sand and shallow water, and the old town has car-free lanes. Check lifeguard flags, and book summer rooms early.
