Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Mediterranean off the east coast of Spain. Palma, the capital, is built around La Seu, a Gothic cathedral on the waterfront, and its old quarter has narrow streets and tapas bars. Inland and along the northwest coast, the Serra de Tramuntana forms a long ridge of mountains, with terraced olive groves and stone villages below.
UNESCO lists the Tramuntana as a cultural landscape, and its walking trails and mountain roads draw hikers and cyclists. The coast has small coves and sandy beaches, several reached on foot. Palma works as a base for day trips by bus and train. Late spring and early autumn are the easiest months for walking and swimming, while July and August bring the most visitors. Five days is enough to see Palma, the mountains and a few beaches at a relaxed pace.
Mallorca in five
- Budget for the tourist taxThe Balearic sustainable tourism tax is charged per person, per night, at your accommodation, and it is higher in peak season.Tourist taxes in Europe
- Hire a car for the mountains and covesBuses cover Palma and the main towns, but the Tramuntana villages and many coves are much easier by car. Mountain roads are narrow and busy in summer.
- Ride the old train to SóllerThe historic wooden train runs from Palma through the Tramuntana to Sóller. Continue by tram to the port.
- Visit in May, June or SeptemberThe sea is warm enough to swim and the roads are calmer than in July and August.
- Pick a coast before you bookPalma suits a city break, Sóller and Pollença the mountains and north, Alcúdia the beaches of the north-east. Moving bases costs a driving day.Sóller

Do you need a car in Mallorca?
Not for Palma or a beach resort, but it helps for the Serra de Tramuntana and the smaller coves. Buses link the main towns.
How much is the Mallorca tourist tax?
It depends on the type of accommodation and the season, and is charged per person, per night. Your hotel adds it to the bill.
When is the best time to visit Mallorca?
May, June, September and October give warm weather and swimmable sea without the July and August crowds.
How many days do you need in Mallorca?
Four to seven days. Three days covers Palma and a day in the Tramuntana, and a week lets you add the north coast and a couple of coves.
How do I get around Mallorca without a car?
Buses link Palma with towns such as Sóller, Alcúdia and Pollença, and the historic train and tram reach Sóller. Coves and mountain villages are far easier with a rental car.
