León is a city in the autonomous community of Castile and León, in northwest Spain, and the capital of León province. It lies on a river terrace between the Bernesga and Torío rivers, south of the Cantabrian Mountains. Legio VI Victrix founded it as a Roman military camp around 29 BC, and long stretches of its Roman walls still stand.
Visit the cathedral for its Gothic architecture and a stained-glass collection that ranks among Europe's biggest, then the Basilica of San Isidoro, whose underground Royal Pantheon keeps 12th-century murals. Casa Botines, a neo-Gothic building by Antoni Gaudí, was built in 1891 and 1892. In the evening, the Barrio Húmedo, the city's drinking and nightlife area, is the place for tapas, which usually come free with a drink. Summer is warm and fairly dry, and winter is cold, with frost early in the morning. An overnight stop suits Camino walkers on the French Way.
León in five
- See the cathedral in strong daylightLeón Cathedral's glass is the draw, and it glows most on a bright day, usually late morning to midday. Check opening hours and ticket rules before you go.
- Add San Isidoro and Gaudí's Casa BotinesThe Romanesque royal pantheon at San Isidoro has painted ceilings, and Casa Botines is Gaudí's rare work outside Catalonia. Check visit times and ticket rules.
- Eat free tapas in Barrio HúmedoIn many bars here, a drink brings a tapa with it. Move between two or three, and order a drink at each, rather than sitting down for a full meal.
- Use the train for Asturias and MadridHigh-speed and regional trains link León with Madrid in roughly 2–2.5 hours and with Oviedo in about an hour or more. Check timetables and book ahead for weekends.Oviedo travel guide
- Book beds on the Camino in seasonThe Camino Francés passes through the old town, so hostels and cheaper rooms fill from May to September. Book ahead if you arrive on foot.

Read the guideLeón FAQ
Is León worth visiting?
Yes. It has one of Spain's great Gothic cathedrals, a Romanesque pantheon, a Gaudí building and lively tapas streets. It is smaller and quieter than many tourist cities.
How many days do you need in León?
One day covers the cathedral, San Isidoro and a tapas crawl. Stay two nights if you want an evening in Barrio Húmedo and a slower morning.
Does León really give free tapas?
In many bars, yes. Order a drink and a small tapa often arrives with it. Quality and size vary, so try a few places and tip modestly.
What is León famous for?
The cathedral's stained glass, the Basilica de San Isidoro, Casa Botines by Gaudí, the Hostal de San Marcos and its place on the Camino de Santiago.
Is León or Burgos better for a stop?
León for tapas and a lively evening scene, Burgos for a medieval cathedral and a calmer feel. They are about 2 hours apart, so many Camino travelers see both.
