Burgos is a city in Castile and León in northern Spain and the capital of Burgos province. It sits on the Arlanzón river about 248 km north of Madrid and is the region's second most populous city after Valladolid. Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, Count of Castile, founded it in 884 as a fortified outpost on the Christian frontier. It became the capital of Castile and a royal seat for much of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Gothic Cathedral of Santa María, a UNESCO World Heritage Site begun in 1221, is the city's landmark, and El Cid and his wife Doña Jimena are buried there.
The French Way of the Camino de Santiago still passes through the city. Burgos is known for Queso de Burgos, a soft white cheese, and for morcilla de Burgos, a sausage with rice as its main ingredient. Local wine from the Ribera de Duero, Rioja and Arlanza areas is a standard part of the meal. The Atapuerca sites lie about 15 km away, and the Museum of Human Evolution in the city is based on those finds. Winters are cold, windy and snowy, while summers are mild.

How many days do you need in Burgos?
One day covers the cathedral and the old town. A second day adds Atapuerca or a drive to Santo Domingo de Silos.
Is Burgos worth visiting?
Yes for one of Spain's great cathedrals and a relaxed old town, especially as a stop between Madrid and the north coast. It is not a beach or nightlife city.
Is Burgos on the Camino de Santiago?
Yes. The Camino Francés passes through, and many pilgrims rest here for a day. You can walk a stage without committing to the whole route.
When is the best time to visit Burgos?
May, June, September and October for mild weather. July and August are warm and dry. Winters are cold, so pack a coat.
How do you get to Atapuerca from Burgos?
About 20 to 30 minutes by car or taxi, or by tour. Visits need advance booking, so check the official site before you go and consider the museum in town as a backup.
