Oviedo is the regional capital of Asturias in northern Spain, and its main administrative and business hub. It is an inland city, about 28 km from Gijón and 27 km from Avilés on the Bay of Biscay. Go for the 9th-century pre-Romanesque churches on Monte Naranco, the Gothic Cathedral of San Salvador and its Cámara Santa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an evening in the cider houses. The historic core sits on hilly ground between the Nalón and Nora rivers.

Asturias Airport is about 45 km away, and Oviedo's railway station has long-distance trains to Madrid and Valencia. The historic center has been largely pedestrianized since 1991, and traffic is restricted on Calle Uría. Try fabada, cachopo and carbayones, and dry sidra in the cider houses on Calle Gascona. Rain falls throughout the year, June to August is the driest stretch, and summers can be hot.

  2. Walk the old town before you see the cathedralThe car-free lanes link plazas, markets and the Gothic cathedral, whose Cámara Santa holds early medieval treasures. Check the cathedral's visiting hours and any ticket rules.
  3. Take a bus to Monte NarancoThe Pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo sit on a hill above the city. Check opening hours and any timed visit rules before you go.
  4. Drink cider the Asturian wayOn Calle Gascona, bars pour cider from a height into a wide glass, and a bottle is shared. Order a small plate of local food alongside, as it is part of the custom.
  5. Pack for rain and visit May to SeptemberOviedo is green because it rains often, especially in spring and autumn. Summer is the driest, and the Picos de Europa and the coast are far better in clear weather.Picos de Europa

Oviedo FAQ

Is Oviedo worth visiting?

Yes for a small, walkable city with a Gothic cathedral, Pre-Romanesque churches, markets and cider houses. It is quiet and green, and it suits a stop between the Picos and the coast.

How many days do you need in Oviedo?

One to two days cover the old town, the cathedral and Monte Naranco. Add days for Gijón, the coast and the Picos de Europa, which are easier from Oviedo than from many other cities.

What is the best time to visit Oviedo?

June to September for the driest, brightest weather and the best days in the mountains. May and October are green and cooler, and winter is wet and quiet.

What is Asturian cider and how do you drink it?

A dry, sharp cider served by pouring it from a height to aerate it. A small amount goes into a wide glass, and you drink it in a gulp, leaving a splash. Bars on Calle Gascona show how.

Is Oviedo or Gijón better to stay in?

Oviedo for sights, culture and quiet evenings, Gijón for the beach and the harbor. They are about 30 minutes apart by train, so you can stay in one and visit the other.
