Serbia

Belgrade, Danube fortresses, Roman sites and medieval monasteries with frescoes are the main draws of Serbia.

Serbia is a landlocked country in Southeast and Central Europe, with Belgrade as its capital and largest city. Most of it lies on the Balkan Peninsula, while the northern third is the flat Pannonian Plain, including the Vojvodina region. Belgrade stands where the Sava meets the Danube, on the site of Singidunum, a fortified settlement the Celtic Scordisci built in the 3rd century BC.

Medieval Serbia left monasteries and frescoes that survive as heritage sites. Sopoćani monastery's paintings are counted among Europe's finest medieval art. The Danube flows through the country for about 588 km and passes the Golubac and Ram fortresses, and river cruises between Budapest and Vienna often stop in Belgrade and Novi Sad. Kopaonik and Zlatibor are mountain resorts for skiing in winter and hiking in warmer months. Expect hot, humid summers in the north and heavy snow in the mountains in winter.

Five things to know before Serbia

  1. Enter Serbia from Kosovo only with a Serbian entry stamp

Serbia does not treat its crossing points with Kosovo as official border posts. Without a Serbian entry stamp you are likely to be refused, so go via a third country such as North Macedonia or Montenegro. Kosovo travel guide

  2. Check the rule for your passport

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish passports need no visa for up to 90 days in a 6-month period, counted from first entry. Get your passport stamped on entry. Visa checker

  3. Register with the police within 24 hours

Hotels register guests automatically. In a private apartment the host does it, so ask on arrival; an unregistered stay can bring a fine and trouble when you leave.

  4. Be ready for questions at the border

Serbia says officers may ask for proof of EUR 50 per day, a return ticket, a paid hotel booking and health insurance covering at least EUR 20,000. Cash or traveler’s checks above EUR 10,000 must be declared on arrival.

  5. Base in Belgrade, then add Novi Sad by train

Belgrade holds most first-trip sights, and Novi Sad is a calm day out on the Danube. Novi Sad’s own station is closed to passengers, so trains from Belgrade end at Petrovaradin. Belgrade travel guide

Serbia FAQ

Do I need a visa for Serbia?

Not on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish passport for up to 90 days in a 6-month period from first entry. Check your own passport in the visa checker, and note that the UK asks for passport validity 90 days past departure.

Can I travel from Serbia to Kosovo and back?

Yes, if you enter Kosovo from Serbia and return the same way. To enter Serbia from Kosovo you need a Serbian entry stamp from an earlier arrival, otherwise route through a third country.

How many days do I need in Serbia?

Three days cover Belgrade and a day in Novi Sad. Add more only for a particular goal, such as Fruška Gora, because the rest of the country needs a car or longer bus and train rides.

Is Serbia in the EU or Schengen?

No. It is outside both, so its days do not count toward the Schengen 90 in 180, and the UK advises allowing extra time at borders with the Schengen area because of EES checks.

When is the best time to visit Serbia?

May, June, September and October for walking and terraces in Belgrade. July and August are hot, though river bars and summer events are busy then.
