Novi Sad is Serbia’s second-largest city and the administrative centre of Vojvodina, in the north of the country. The Danube separates the flat Bačka bank, where the main city stands, from the hilly Srem bank, where Petrovaradin and Sremska Kamenica sit below Fruška Gora. Petrovaradin Fortress is the city’s best-known landmark, with views over the river and rooftops. Nearby, Stari Grad, or Old Town, has museums, cafés, restaurants and shops.

For art and history, visit the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Museum of Vojvodina or the Museum of Novi Sad inside the fortress. The Serbian National Theatre has been part of the city since 1861. Local food includes ćevapi, burek and the index sandwich, a roll filled with melted cheese, ham, mushrooms and sauce. For time outdoors, Fruška Gora National Park is about 20 km from the city centre, with hiking trails, vineyards and monasteries. Novi Sad has four distinct seasons. Autumn is drier than spring and often brings long, sunny, warm spells.

Novi Sad in five

  2. Check the timetable that ends on 12 December 2026Srbijavoz says its 2025/26 timetable runs until 12 December 2026. For travel after that date, look for the new timetable before you plan the trip, because station arrangements can change with it.Train tickets and transport
  3. Start at the tourist office on Liberty SquareThe city tourist info center at Trg slobode 3 lists weekday hours of 08:00 to 21:00 and Saturday hours of 09:00 to 17:00. City Hall, the Name of Mary church and the pedestrian streets start at the door.
  4. Climb to the Clock Tower plateau at PetrovaradinThe Upper Town is dominated by the Clock Tower, and the plateau gives the best view of Novi Sad and the Danube. The fortress also holds the City Museum, studios and the Underground Military Galleries.
  5. Check EXIT before you plan around the fortressEXIT long took over Petrovaradin, but its own news of 29 June 2026 called its 26th birthday the first without final preparations at the fortress. Look at exitfest.org for any Novi Sad dates.

Novi Sad FAQ

Is Novi Sad worth visiting from Belgrade?

Yes for a calm day out. The pedestrian center, the Petrovaradin Fortress and the Danube promenade are close together, and the city was European Capital of Culture in 2022. It is a poor fit if you want nightlife on Belgrade's scale.

How do you get from Belgrade to Novi Sad?

By train from Belgrade Centar to Petrovaradin station, then a free shuttle bus to the center, since Novi Sad's main station is not open. Coaches also serve the main bus station, which the tourism organization says handles about 1,500 departures and arrivals daily.

What is there to do at Petrovaradin Fortress?

Walk the Upper Town to the Clock Tower for the Danube view, visit the City Museum, tour the Underground Military Galleries, and see artist studios, galleries and cafes. The Lower Town below, Gradić, is a baroque quarter of narrow streets.

How many days do you need in Novi Sad?

One day covers Liberty Square, the Old Town and the fortress. Two days leave room for Sremski Karlovci or another Fruška Gora stop, which the city tourism organization suggests as a third day of a longer stay.

When is the best time to visit Novi Sad?

May, June, September and October suit walking by the Danube and on the fortress. July and August are hot, with highs near 30 C. Winters are cold and gray, and the museums and the covered attractions carry the day.
