Belgrade is Serbia’s capital and largest city, where the Sava meets the Danube. Its historic core centers on Kalemegdan, a fortress and park above the Sava, with some of the city’s oldest architecture. Nearby, Knez Mihailova Street and Republic Square lead into central neighborhoods. The Church of Saint Sava is one of the world’s largest Orthodox church buildings. Museums include the National Museum, with more than 400,000 exhibits, and the Nikola Tesla Museum, which holds Tesla’s personal items and around 160,000 original documents.

A visit can combine history, museums, Serbian food and evenings out. Skadarlija is known for its traditional kafanas and old Belgrade music. Along the Sava and Danube, river barges host clubs that stay open until dawn. Across the rivers, Zemun has a Central European look. Ada Ciganlija, a former river island joined to the mainland, has about 7 km of beaches, sports facilities and bars; swimming is popular in summer. Belgrade has four seasons and hot summers. The riverside districts, museums and outdoor recreation areas each give you a different reason to spend time beyond the historic center.
