Kosovo

Kosovo is a small, landlocked country in the Balkans, known for medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries, mountain trails and its capital, Pristina.

Kosovo is a landlocked country in Southeastern Europe, bordered by Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia. Pristina, the capital and largest city, is where most visitors start: Pristina International Airport is the country's main and only international airport. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. Serbia does not recognize it, so its status is disputed, and the number of UN member states that recognize it varies by source and date.

Visitors come for the medieval Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries in Deçan, Peja, Prizren and Gračanica, which form the UNESCO-listed Medieval Monuments of Kosovo. Prizren Fortress and the Roman town of Ulpiana near Gračanica are also worth a stop. The west and south have mountains, with Gjeravica the highest peak at 2,656 m. The euro is the official currency. Late spring to early autumn is the best window for mountain hiking, since winter brings cold and heavy snow.

Five things to know before Kosovo

  1. Enter Serbia via a third country

FCDO says you cannot travel from Kosovo to Serbia without a Serbian entry stamp from an airport or another Serbian crossing, and advises a route through a third country. Fix the order of your countries first. Serbia and Kosovo border rules

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days. Passport validity rules differ by government, so check yours. Visa checker

  3. Pay in euros and keep cash for small places

Canada's advice describes the economy as largely cash-based, with cards accepted in some larger establishments and cash machines in urban centers. Money and cards

  4. Buy local insurance if you drive in

FCDO says European green card insurance is not valid in Kosovo and local third-party cover is needed. It can be bought at the border or in advance. Border cover explained

  5. Start in Pristina

The capital is the main air gateway and the base for museums, cafes and day trips by road. Two days covers the center. Pristina

Kosovo FAQ

Can I travel from Kosovo to Serbia?

Not directly unless you hold a Serbian entry stamp from an airport or another Serbian crossing. FCDO says you are likely to be refused without one and advises a route through a third country such as North Macedonia or Montenegro.

Does Kosovo use the euro?

Yes. The euro is the currency even though Kosovo is not in the EU. Cards work in some larger establishments, cash machines are in urban centers, and the economy is largely cash-based.

Do I need a visa for Kosovo?

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days. Check the visa checker and your own government's advice for passport validity.

Is Kosovo in the EU or Schengen?

No. Kosovo is outside both, so you pass a border check on entry and when you return to the Schengen area, and days in Kosovo do not count toward the Schengen limit.

Is Kosovo safe to visit?

Read your government's current advice before you go. FCDO's advice covers large gatherings in Pristina and other urban areas and has a separate section on regional risks, including the north near the Serbian border.
