Tirana is the capital of Albania, on a plain in the country's central west, with Dajti mountain rising to the east. It has been the capital since 1920, and the center is small enough to cross on foot. Skanderbeg Square anchors the city and is named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the 15th-century national hero. The Et'hem Bey Mosque, from the Ottoman period, stands close by. Bunk'Art is a bunker built in the Communist era for the country's leadership. Blloku was once a closed district for party officials and now has cafes, bars and shops.

Tirana fits a short city break or a stop between the coast and the mountains. Two to three days cover the center, the museums and a ride up Dajti on the cable car. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for walking the city. Summer is hot, so plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and evening.

Tirana in five

  1. Take the hourly airport bus into townThe airport site lists a bus every full hour around the clock, 30–40 minutes to the city, at 400 lek (€4). It leaves from behind the Opera and Ballet palace. The official taxi takes 20–25 minutes.Airport to city center
  2. Pair Bunk'Art 1 with the cable carBunk'Art 1 sits behind the Dajti Ekspres lower station and lists daily hours of 9:30 to 17:30. Bunk'Art 2, opposite the municipality, lists 9:30 to 18:30. Do the two on different halves of the day.Tirana in 2 days
  3. Skip Tuesday for Dajti EkspresThe operator's regular day off is Tuesday, except when it is a public holiday. Tickets are sold only at the lower station and not through third parties, so ignore resellers offering them.
  4. Check the history museum before you plan around itThe National Historical Museum faces Skanderbeg Square. Look at its own site for the current status before you build a morning on it, and keep Bunk'Art 2 or the House of Leaves as the fallback.
  5. Choose a base by your eveningsSkanderbeg Square suits sights on foot, Blloku suits restaurants and bars, the New Bazaar suits food and quieter streets. All are workable on foot.Where to stay in Tirana

Tirana FAQ

How many days do you need in Tirana?

Two days cover Skanderbeg Square, a Bunk'Art museum, the New Bazaar and an evening in Blloku. Add a third for the Dajti cable car or a day trip to Krujë, Durrës or Berat.

Is Tirana worth visiting?

Yes, for a compact capital with bunker museums, Ottoman and Zog-era buildings, and good food. It is a base as much as a destination, because Berat, Durrës and Shkodra are all reachable by road.

Is Tirana walkable?

The center is, from the square to Blloku and the New Bazaar. Bunk'Art 1 and the Dajti cable car sit on the edge of town, so use a taxi or bus for those.

What is the best time to visit Tirana?

May, June, September and October bring warm days without the July and August heat. Winter is wet but quiet, and the center is lit up for the end-of-year holidays.

How do you get from Tirana airport to the center?

By the hourly airport bus, which runs around the clock, or by the airport's official taxi. Both are listed on the airport website, with the bus the cheaper choice by a wide margin.
