Saranda is a bay town on the Ionian coast of southern Albania, across the water from the Greek island of Corfu. It works as a base for the beaches at Ksamil, a short drive south, and for Butrint, an ancient city with Greek, Roman and Byzantine layers that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town has cafes, restaurants and ferry links to Corfu, so it suits travelers who want to eat out in the evenings and move between Albania and Greece. Summer is the season for swimming. Spring and autumn are cooler for walking the ruins at Butrint. Two to four days covers the town, a half day at Butrint and a beach day. Couples, families and travelers adding a sea stop to a longer Albania or Greece route are the usual fit.

Saranda FAQ

How many days do you need in Saranda?

Two nights cover the waterfront, Butrint and a beach afternoon in Ksamil. Add a third night for Gjirokastra and the Blue Eye, which is a full day by road.

Is Saranda worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a south-coast base with Butrint, Gjirokastra and the Corfu ferry within reach. It is a resort town, so come for the setting and the day trips more than the old streets.

Should you stay in Saranda or Ksamil?

Saranda for restaurants, buses and the ferry port; Ksamil for beach coves and quiet mornings. Ksamil is closer to Butrint, but with fewer evening choices and heavy summer crowds.

Can you visit Saranda from Corfu in a day?

In season, yes: the 2026 timetable has later sailings from spring. From January to early March there is one sailing a day each way, so stay a night. The ferry guide lists seasons and last boats.

When is the best time to visit Saranda?

June and September give warm sea with fewer people than July and August, and spring and October suit Butrint and Gjirokastra. The Riviera question is answered in the where-to-stay guide.
