Lekursi Castle

Lekursi Castle above Saranda, built in 1537, with sweeping Ionian Sea views. Plan a visit before sunset and allow time for the traffic after.

Lekursi Castle sits on a hill about 1 km southeast of Saranda, above the Ionian Sea. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had it built in 1537 to defend the port. Its almost square plan and two round towers give a clear view over Saranda, the ruins of Butrint, and the Straits of Corfu. Most people come for the sunset from the hilltop, where a restaurant, a pizzeria and a bar sit near the walls. Arrive early in the evening to avoid the peak crowds.

Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had the castle built in 1537. Its job was to defend the port of Saranda against the Venetians. The plan is almost square, with two round towers, and from the top the fortress overlooks the town, the ruins of Butrint, and the Straits of Corfu. In Albanian it is known as Kalaja e Lëkurësit.

The fortress was later renovated. In the summer months part of it works as a restaurant and cafe.

The site is split into four areas: a large main restaurant, a pizzeria, a small drinks section, and a sunset bar a little lower down. The outdoor seating is large, and bus groups often stop here.

Walk along the walls for views in several directions. The frescos on the right side of the building are easy to miss, so look for them before you enter the main seating area.

Getting up and down

From Saranda you can walk up from the promenade in about 45 minutes, hike for 30 to 45 minutes, or take a taxi from the city. If you drive, expect a narrow road and limited free parking.

The last stretch from the car park to the entrance is gravel and dirt. If walking is hard for you, it is worth taking a taxi to the main entrance area or planning a slower pace.

Evenings and sunset

Sunset is the busiest time. In peak season the terraces and the road fill with people and cars, and one visitor's drive back took an hour once the traffic built up. Leaving just after the sun goes down, or waiting until the crowds thin, is the simplest way to avoid the jam.

Outside the peak season the site can be much quieter, and the views are the same.

Eating and drinking

The pizza is a good choice, and the drinks are made carefully at prices that feel fair for the setting. The food is simpler than the view, so order a pizza and a drink rather than a long meal. Live traditional music sometimes plays in season, which makes an evening meal here more lively.
