In short

Hydrofoils take 30–45 minutes and ferries 55–70 minutes. In summer, boats run from early morning to evening, with the last return from Saranda at 20:00 from June to September, so a day trip is easy. From January to early March and mid-November to December there is one sailing a day each way, so plan an overnight. Rental cars may not be carried across, per the operator.

Corfu to Saranda: the short answer

Saranda sits across a narrow strait from Corfu, and in season you can cross in well under an hour. The Ionian Seaways timetable for 2026 lists high-speed hydrofoils at 30–45 minutes and passenger or car ferries at 55–70 minutes. Whether the crossing works as a day trip depends almost entirely on the month, because the number of sailings swings from one a day in winter to a boat nearly every hour in summer. The Saranda travel guide covers what to do on arrival, and the Albania guide covers the country as a whole.

For a day trip between roughly April and October, take a morning boat out and a late afternoon or evening boat back, and check the last sailing before you buy a ticket. For winter, treat Saranda as an overnight stop.

Everything below comes from the operator's own 2026 timetable page, checked on 4 October 2026. Timetables are republished each year, so use these numbers to understand the pattern and check the current page for your date. This guide quotes no fares because none was confirmed.

Hydrofoil or ferry?

The operator's page lists two kinds of vessel. The high-speed hydrofoil, which it calls the Flying Dolphin, is the faster option at 30–45 minutes. The passenger or car ferry takes 55–70 minutes. Which one you get depends on the sailing, so look at the vessel type when you choose a time rather than assuming. For a day trip, the difference is a quarter of an hour each way, which rarely matters, so choose by departure time first and vessel second.

Ionian Seaways is not the only company. Finikas Lines also sells tickets for the Corfu to Saranda crossing on its own site, and other companies may sail in some seasons. Compare each operator's timetable page, because departure times, vessel types and the last return can differ. Booking directly with an operator, or through a clearly identified agent, lets you see the vessel type and the exact departure before you pay.

The Greek island ferries guide explains how ferry booking works on the Greek side in general. For this crossing, the main decision is the date, not the company.

The timetable by season

The operator splits the year into seasons, and the changes are large. The table below summarizes the 2026 page, using the first and last departures that matter for a day trip. Times are in local time at the port of departure, which is how the operator shows them.

  • 1 January to 6 March: one sailing a day each way. The boat leaves Corfu at 09:00 and Saranda at 10:00, and the Saranda departure leaves shortly after the boat arrives. There is no useful time in town.

  • 7 March to 10 April: two sailings each way. Corfu at 09:00 and 16:30, Saranda at 10:00 and 16:00. A same-day return gives about six hours in Saranda.

  • 11 to 30 April: four sailings each way. Saranda departs at 09:00, 10:00, 12:00 and 16:00.

  • May: seven sailings each way. The last departure from Saranda is 18:00, and from Corfu 20:30.

  • June to September: many sailings. In July to September the page lists boats from Corfu starting at 08:30 and a late 22:30 departure, and from Saranda starting at 06:00 with the last at 20:00.

  • October: the last departure from Saranda is 18:00, and the schedule thins from the middle of the month.

  • 1 to 10 November: four sailings each way, with the last departure from Saranda at 16:00.

  • 11 November to 31 December: one sailing each way, leaving Saranda at 10:00, or 14:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

The practical lesson is to read the last departure from Saranda for your date, not the first from Corfu. A morning boat out is easy to find almost all year; a sensible boat back is not.

Day trip or overnight?

From mid-spring to early autumn a day trip works. Take a boat from Corfu that arrives by mid-morning, go straight to what you came for, and return on a boat that leaves with a clear margin. From June to September the last departure from Saranda is 20:00, which gives a long day: a morning at Butrint and an afternoon in Ksamil fit comfortably. In April and the start of November the last boat is at 16:00, so the day is short, and a morning arrival with an early lunch and a walk is about all you can do.

In winter, stay a night. With one sailing a day each way, the boat you arrive on turns around soon after, and the next one back leaves the following morning. A traveler on a winter sailing should book a room in town, near the port, and treat the evening as an extra rather than a risk. The where to stay in Saranda guide compares the waterfront, Ksamil and the hillside.

Who should not do a day trip? Anyone with a flight or a train the same evening on the Greek side, anyone traveling with very young children in the summer heat, and anyone who wants to see both Butrint and the Blue Eye in one outing. Those plans need a night. A guided tour that handles transport, borders and timing is a sound alternative, and it is the lowest-stress way to do a single day.

Border checks on both sides

You cross from Greece into Albania, so you pass border control on each side. On the Albanian side, the UK government says British citizens can stay up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa and that the passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The Albanian foreign ministry adds that a passport for a visa-exempt traveler must have been issued within the previous 10 years, and that border officers may ask for a return ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds. A day trip with a return ticket in your pocket answers most of those questions; an overnight needs a booking confirmation.

On the Greek side, Greece is in the Schengen area, so the entry and exit system applies when non-EU travelers return. If you are on a short Schengen stay, read EES explained and the Schengen 90/180 rule, since a return from Albania counts as a new entry. Days in Albania do not count toward your Schengen limit. Carry your passport on the boat even if you are only going for a few hours, and allow extra time at the port on both ends for passport control.

Cars, luggage and the time zone

The timetable page carries a notice that rental cars may not be carried from Corfu to Albania. If you have a rental car on Corfu, leave it there, take the boat as a foot passenger and rent or use a taxi on the Albanian side. Check your rental contract for its own cross-border rules. The page also lists car-ferry vessels, but that does not mean your rental can board.

Pack light for a day trip. A small bag is easier through border control and on a hydrofoil, and a locker or a hotel can hold the rest on the Corfu side. If you are staying overnight, keep your passport, booking confirmation and chargers in the bag you carry.

One more detail catches visitors. The timetable shows departures in local time, and Greece runs one hour ahead of Albania. When you plan a tight connection, convert the times before you commit and set your phone to the local time of the port you are leaving.

Pairing the crossing with a plan

A day in Saranda from Corfu usually comes down to one of two plans. The first is a morning at Butrint and a swim at Ksamil, which is the standard pairing and fits a summer timetable. The second is a slow walk along the waterfront with lunch, which suits the shorter spring and autumn windows. Gjirokastra and the Blue Eye need a full day by road and do not fit between two boats; give them a night in Saranda instead.

If you are building a Corfu trip, Corfu in 5 days places an Albania day within the island itinerary, and the Corfu travel guide covers where to base on the Greek side.

Mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is buying a morning ticket without checking the last boat back. The second is assuming that summer frequency applies in April or November. The third is leaving the passport at the hotel. The fourth is expecting to take a rental car across. The fifth is forgetting the hour difference when timing a return. The last is trying to fit three sights into a day when the timetable gives you six hours.

Set up the basics before you go. An eSIM for Albania keeps maps and taxi apps working on the Albanian side, where an EU roaming plan may not apply, and travel insurance covers cancellations, delays and medical care. If the boat times do not suit, a guided tour from Corfu handles the whole day.

FAQ

How long is the ferry from Corfu to Saranda?

The Ionian Seaways timetable lists 30–45 minutes for the high-speed hydrofoil and 55–70 minutes for the passenger or car ferry. Check which vessel your sailing uses when you book.

Can you do Corfu to Saranda as a day trip?

Yes from spring to autumn. In June to September the last boat leaves Saranda at 20:00 on the operator's 2026 page. In winter the single daily sailing leaves no usable time in town, so stay a night.

Do you need a passport for the Corfu to Saranda ferry?

Can you take a rental car from Corfu to Albania?

The Ionian Seaways timetable page carries a notice that rental cars may not be carried from Corfu to Albania. Check your rental contract and rent on the Albanian side if you want to drive.

Is there more than one ferry company?

Yes. Ionian Seaways and Finikas Lines both sell the crossing, and others may too. Compare each operator's own timetable page, because sailing times and vessel types differ.
