Pristina is the capital and largest city of Kosovo, in the center of the country, and most of its sights are close enough to reach on foot. The best-known landmark is the Newborn monument, a large sculpture that spells out NEWBORN. It was unveiled in 2008, the year Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. Mother Teresa Boulevard, the main street, is an easy place to sit at a cafe and watch the city go by.
Visitors come for the museums, the National Library building and the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, then linger over coffee in the center. Germia Park, a forested area on the edge of the city, is the place for a green break. Two days cover the city well. Spring and early fall suit walking and day trips best, since winters are cold. For an Ottoman-era old town, the usual day trip is Prizren.
Pristina in five
- Plan the Serbia leg before you bookFCDO says you cannot travel from Kosovo to Serbia without a Serbian entry stamp from an airport or another Serbian border crossing, and advises a route through a third country. Fix the order of your countries first.Serbia and Kosovo border rules
- Buy local insurance if you drive inFCDO says European green card insurance is not valid in Kosovo and local third-party cover is needed. The Kosovo Insurance Bureau sells border policies at crossings and online, and lists agreements with four neighbors.
- Order a registered taxi, not a street offerFCDO describes fares as regulated and advises registered firms, usually ordered by phone, over cars that approach you. It adds that international ride-hailing apps are not available.
- Keep evenings flexible near gatheringsFCDO's current advice notes large gatherings in Pristina in the evenings that can disrupt traffic and public transport. Allow extra time and keep away from crowds and demonstrations.
- Choose a base on foot or by taxiThe center around the boulevard and the old bazaar keeps the museums within a short walk. Residential districts trade that for quiet and a taxi ride to every sight.Where to stay in Pristina

Pristina FAQ
How many days do you need in Pristina?
Two days cover the central museums, the boulevard and a long evening in the cafes. Add a third for a half-day to a monastery or a day in Prizren or Peja.
Is Pristina worth visiting?
Yes, as a compact capital with museums, cafes and a young city feel, and as the practical base for the rest of Kosovo. It is a short stay, not a week.
Can you go from Pristina to Serbia?
Not directly without a valid Serbian entry stamp from elsewhere. FCDO says you are likely to be refused entry from Kosovo to Serbia otherwise, and advises a route through a third country such as North Macedonia.
Do you need a visa for Pristina?
FCDO says British passport holders can visit Kosovo without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Rules depend on your passport, so check your own government's advice and Kosovo's foreign ministry.
Is Pristina safe to walk around?
FCDO describes the political situation as generally stable, with occasional protests in Pristina that are usually peaceful. It lists pickpockets at airports and on public transport and advises pre-booked taxis.
