Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia, on the Vardar River. The Stone Bridge connects Macedonia Square with the Old Bazaar, where mosques, caravanserais and market streets date from the city’s Ottoman period. Skopje Fortress overlooks the river and the central neighborhoods. Around Macedonia Square, statues and large civic buildings create a sharp contrast with the bazaar’s narrow streets.
Start with the Old Bazaar, the fortress and central museums. If you have more time, visit Mount Vodno or Matka Canyon outside the city. Two days gives you time to see central Skopje without rushing; allow another half day for an outing to Vodno or Matka Canyon. Spring and fall are comfortable seasons for exploring on foot. Skopje works for a short city break or as a stop on a wider trip through North Macedonia.

- Cross the Stone Bridge into the Old BazaarThe 15th-century bridge links the new center to the bazaar, where the tourism portal lists Daut Pasha Amam, Kurshumli An and the 16th-century clock tower. Start there, before the heat.Skopje in 2 days
- Take the airport shuttle or a posted-rate taxiThe airport lists a shuttle at 199 MKD one way, 08:00 to 20:00, and an official taxi on a price list posted at the exit. The airport is about 21 km east of town.Skopje airport to the center
- Visit the old railway station for the 1963 quakeThe Museum of the City of Skopje occupies part of the station wrecked on 26 July 1963, and its clock still shows 5:17. Check the museum's own site for current hours before you plan around it.
- Keep bags and phones close late at nightUK advice reports pickpocketing by gangs of children and bag snatching in the main shopping and entertainment areas late at night, with foreign nationals specifically targeted.
- Pair Skopje with Lake Ohrid, but not in a dayThe two places make one trip across the country. Skopje is the arrival hub; give the lake its own nights rather than a rushed same-day return.Ohrid travel guide

How many days do you need in Skopje?
Two days cover the Old Bazaar, the Stone Bridge, Kale fortress, Macedonia Square and a museum. Add a third for Matka Canyon or the Vodno cable car and the Nerezi monastery.
Is Skopje worth visiting?
Yes, as a base for one or two days. It combines an Ottoman bazaar, a fortress and a center rebuilt after the 1963 earthquake, and it is where many international flights land before the trip to Ohrid.
How do you get from Skopje airport to the center?
By the airport shuttle bus, listed at 199 MKD one way between 08:00 and 20:00, or by the airport taxi on its posted price list. The airport is about 21 km east of the center.
Is Skopje safe for tourists?
Attacks on foreigners are extremely rare, says UK advice, but pickpocketing and bag snatching occur in busy shopping and entertainment areas late at night. Keep valuables out of reach and carry a photocopy of your passport.
What is the best time to visit Skopje?
May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot in the valley, and from November to February thick fog can delay flights at Skopje airport, according to UK advice.
