Ohrid is a city in southwestern North Macedonia on the northeast shore of Lake Ohrid. The town and the lake are separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the town was listed for its cultural heritage in 1979, and the lake for its natural heritage in 1980. In the old town, you can visit medieval churches, Ottoman-era mosques and historic houses, then head to the shore to swim, sail or watch birds. Samuel’s Fortress rises above the old town, and the 13th-century Church of St John at Kaneo overlooks the lake.

Ohrid suits a trip that combines cultural sights with time by the water. The old town has steep streets, so uphill walks can be difficult if you have limited mobility. June to August is the main visiting season; summers are warm and dry, and the lake moderates temperatures. The Monastery of St Naum is about 29 km south of Ohrid by the regional road. The city is also the largest town on the lake, with a population of 38,818 at the 2021 census.

Ohrid in five

  1. Give Ohrid two nights, not a dayThe fortress, the old-town churches, the Kaneo shore and the monastery at the far end of the lake each take a half day. A same-day round trip from Skopje leaves little time for any of them.Ohrid in 2 days
  2. Do not count on a bus from the airportThe Ohrid airport site says there is no regular shuttle bus; only tour and charter shuttles run. Taxis meet arrivals, and six rental agencies operate there. How to get to Ohrid
  3. Climb to Samuel's Fortress, then walk down to KaneoThe tourism portal says 18 towers and four gates of the fortress survive. St John at Kaneo, a 13th-century church above the water, is the usual last stop of the day.Skopje, the other half of the trip
  4. Make sure your stay is registered with the policeUK advice says to register within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels do it at check-in; with a private host, ask who files it and keep the paper until you leave.
  5. Pick the old town or the beach strip before you bookThe old town suits churches on foot. The Ohrid Riviera beaches the tourism portal lists lie 4 to 10 km out, so a car or taxi becomes part of every day.Where to stay in Ohrid
