North Macedonia is a landlocked country in Southeastern Europe, bordering Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Serbia. Skopje, the capital and largest city, holds roughly a quarter of all residents. Most of the terrain is mountainous, and Lake Ohrid, Lake Prespa and Dojran Lake lie on the southern border. Lake Ohrid ranks among the oldest lakes on Earth. Its shore town, Ohrid, has Byzantine churches with frescoes, including St Sophia, Perivleptos and the Kurbinovo church, which are on the world heritage list.
Visitors come for the lakes, the churches, Roman ruins such as Stobi, and a food culture that mixes Balkan, Mediterranean and Ottoman influences. Tavče gravče, ajvar and Šopska salad are common dishes. Lake visits and swimming make summer the easy choice, and skiing is the winter draw. The Šar Mountains and the Osogovo range frame the central Vardar valley. Winters can drop to about −20 °C, and summers can reach 40 °C. In July and August, Demir Kapija and Gevgelija often go above 40 °C.

North Macedonia FAQ
Do I need a visa for North Macedonia?
Not on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish passport for a short visit. The UK says three months, and Canada, Australia and Germany say 90 days. Check your passport in the visa checker.
How do I get from Skopje to Ohrid?
By road: no railway reaches Ohrid. The airport taxi list shows about 200 km from Skopje airport, and the Ohrid guide compares buses, taxis, cars and the flight into Ohrid's own airport.
Is North Macedonia in the EU or Schengen?
No. It is outside both, so you pass passport checks at every border and its days do not use up your Schengen allowance.

May, June and September to early October. July and August are very hot in Skopje, though Lake Ohrid is at its liveliest then.
How many days do you need in North Macedonia?
Four or five days covers Skopje, a canyon half day and two nights at Lake Ohrid. Mavrovo National Park adds a day by road.
