Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, on the River Clyde in west central Scotland, and the third-largest in the United Kingdom. It had an estimated 632,350 people in 2020. In Victorian times it was called the 'second city of the British Empire', when the city was known for shipbuilding and locomotive making. Its 18th-century wealth came partly from tobacco, sugar and cotton, including the Atlantic slave trade, and the museums now cover that history. Most of the city's museums and galleries are free to enter.
Glasgow works well for a city break built around museums, live music, shopping and food. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park and the Riverside Museum are among the best-known. Two or three days covers the central sights, and Loch Lomond is a popular day trip. The city is the rainiest in the UK, with more than 170 days of rain a year, so pack waterproofs.

Read the guideGlasgow FAQ
Is Glasgow or Edinburgh better to visit?
Edinburgh has the castle and the famous old town; Glasgow has free museums, music and lower room prices. Trains take about 50 minutes, so many visitors see both.
How do I get from Glasgow Airport to the city center?
The express bus runs from outside the terminal to the city center in about 20 minutes. There is no train station at the airport.
Are Glasgow's museums free?
Most city-run museums, including Kelvingrove and the Riverside Museum, are free. Special exhibitions may charge.
How many days do you need in Glasgow?
One full day covers Kelvingrove, the West End and a music night. Two days add the Riverside Museum and a trip to Loch Lomond or Stirling. Add a night if you are chasing a gig or want a slow pace.
What is the best area to stay in Glasgow?
The city center for trains and the Subway, the West End for parks, cafes and Kelvingrove, and Merchant City for restaurants and nightlife. The Subway loop and buses make all three easy to link.
