Stirling is a small city in central Scotland, on the rail line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Stirling Castle sits on a steep rock above the old town, and Scottish monarchs used its royal palace for centuries. Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned as an infant in 1543 at the Church of the Holy Rude nearby. Outside town on Abbey Craig, the National Wallace Monument honors William Wallace, a leader in the Wars of Independence. Robert the Bruce beat an English army at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, a short drive south of town.

A day trip from Edinburgh or Glasgow can cover the castle and the old town, but the monument and the battlefield need transport beyond walking. Two or more days suit travelers who want Bannockburn, the countryside to the north and a slower pace. Spring through early autumn is the easiest time to walk the castle grounds and climb to the monument, while winter days are short. Stay in town if you want to walk: the station is a short walk from the center and the old town is compact.

Stirling FAQ

How many days do you need in Stirling?

One day covers the castle and the Old Town, and a second adds the Wallace Monument and Bannockburn grounds. A third day suits Doune Castle or a Loch Lomond drive. Stirling works as a base because the main rail lines meet here.

Is Stirling a good day trip from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Yes. Historic Environment Scotland says Stirling is served by trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the castle is about a 0.5 mile uphill walk from the station. A castle and Old Town day is realistic; add the monument by bus or taxi.

Is the Wallace Monument worth the climb?

If you like views and a museum-style climb, yes. It has 246 spiral steps, three exhibition galleries and The Crown at the top, but there is no lift. Allow an hour, book a slot and skip it if stairs are a problem.

Can you visit Bannockburn right now?

Only the outdoors. The National Trust for Scotland says the centre is closed for redevelopment and plans to reopen in mid-2028, while the monuments and grounds remain open. Do not plan around the exhibition.

Is there a tourist tax in Stirling?

Not yet. VisitScotland lists a Stirling visitor levy of 3% on the first 7 nights of accommodation from June 2027. Stays before that date are not affected, but check the council page when you book 2027 trips.
