Wrocław is the capital of Lower Silesia, in southwestern Poland, on the Oder River. Its Market Square dates from the 13th century, and the Old Town around it is small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon. The Oder splits the center into islands and channels joined by bridges, so walks along the water are easy to fit in. Gothic churches and old merchant houses line the streets, and the university buildings sit close by.
The Racławice Panorama, a large painting of the 1794 Battle of Racławice, is housed in the Centennial Hall, a building finished in 1913 and listed by UNESCO. Small bronze dwarfs are set around the center, and you can look for them as you walk. Late spring and early autumn suit walks along the river and through the squares. Two days is enough for the main sights at a relaxed pace.
Wrocław in five
- See the Racławice Panorama earlyThe 15 by 114 meter painting wraps around the viewer, and the same ticket opens the permanent exhibitions of three more museums for three months. Prices and hours are in the rules below.Wrocław in 2 days
- Follow the dwarfs on the official mapThe bronze dwarfs are free to find. Use the city's online Dwarf Directory to plan a route before you walk, rather than hunting at random.
- Take bus 106 from the airportLine 106 runs by day and night line 206 after dark; the daytime bus stops on Dworcowa Street by the main station, so a station-area hotel needs no transfer.
- Time the Centennial Hall for an eveningThe hall, its fountain, the Pavilion of the Four Domes and the zoo share the east side, so give them an afternoon and evening together. Opening days are in the rules below.
- Climb Ostrów Tumski for the viewThe cathedral's viewing terrace is ticketed, has short Sunday hours and is closed to visits during services, so put Ostrów Tumski on a weekday or Saturday.Wrocław or Kraków

How many days do you need in Wrocław?
Two days cover the Market Square, Ostrów Tumski, the Racławice Panorama and the Centennial Hall area. Add a third day for the zoo and Afrykarium or for the Church of Peace in Świdnica.
Is Wrocław worth visiting?
Yes, for a compact center with Gothic and Baroque landmarks, the Racławice Panorama, the UNESCO Centennial Hall and a mapped trail of bronze dwarfs. It suits travelers who like walkable cities with museums and parks.
Do you need a car in Wrocław?
No. The center is walkable and trams reach the Centennial Hall and the zoo. A car only helps for day trips into Lower Silesia, such as Świdnica.
Where are the Wrocław dwarfs?
They are small bronze figures placed around the center. The city's Dwarf Directory lets you locate them on a map and build your own plan, and a Dwarf Festival for children is held in September.
Is Wrocław or Kraków better for a first trip to Poland?
Kraków suits a heavy-history trip and needs about three days with Auschwitz-Birkenau. Wrocław suits a lighter city break in two days. See Wrocław or Kraków for the full comparison.
