Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, on the Vltava River in the historic region of Bohemia. Much of the center keeps its medieval and Baroque street plan. Most visitors head to Old Town Square, with its astronomical clock, the Lesser Town below the castle, and Charles Bridge, a 14th-century stone bridge lined with statues. Prague Castle stands on a hill above the river.
Prague suits a first trip to Central Europe, whether as a city break or as a longer stay with day trips. The historic center is compact and walkable, and trams cover the longer distances. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for walking, while summer brings the largest crowds. Plan at least three days for the castle, the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter and the Lesser Town, and add more if you want day trips or time in the beer halls.
Prague in five
- Cross Charles Bridge before 8amThe bridge is open around the clock and fills from mid morning. Early and late you can stop and look at the statues.
- Pay in koruna and decline conversionCzechia uses the koruna (CZK). When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose koruna for a better rate.
- Take the bus from the airportThere is no airport train. Bus 119 runs to the metro at Nádraží Veleslavín in about 20 minutes; the AE bus goes to the main station.
- Buy a castle circuit ticketThe castle courtyards are free. St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane are on a paid circuit ticket.
- Validate paper ticketsStamp a paper transit ticket on first use in the machine on board or at the metro entrance. Inspectors fine unstamped tickets.

Rules for Prague, checked
- Czechia is in the Schengen Area. Check entry requirements on the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (mzv.gov.cz) before you fly.Source
- Non-EU travelers may be fingerprinted and photographed at the border under the EU Entry/Exit System.
- Check the current EES rules on the European Commission's website before you travel.
- Czechia uses the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro. Cafés and hotels usually take cards, while some small shops and market stalls take only cash.
- Dial 112 for police, fire or an ambulance. The number works across Czechia and the rest of the EU.

Read the guidePrague FAQ
How do I get from Prague Airport to the city center?
Take bus 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín and change to metro line A, about 35–40 minutes in all on one ticket. The AE bus runs to the main station.
Does Prague use the euro?
No. Czechia uses the koruna (CZK). Some places accept euros at poor rates; pay in koruna by card and decline currency conversion.
How many days do I need in Prague?
Three days covers the castle, the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter and one district away from the center. Add a day for Kutná Hora.
When is the best time to visit Prague?
May, June and September have mild weather and fewer groups than July and August. December is cold but has the Christmas markets.
Is Prague safe from pickpockets?
Petty theft is the usual problem, on trams, Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. Keep valuables in front pockets or a zipped bag, and book taxis by app or from a rank rather than hailing one on the street.
