Kutná Hora is a small town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, about 52 km east of Prague, with roughly 22,000 inhabitants. The town grew rich from silver mining and was once one of the most important royal towns of medieval Bohemia, second only to Prague. Its historic centre and the Sedlec area, with the abbey and ossuary, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
Travelers come for the Sedlec Ossuary, a small chapel whose decoration is estimated to use the bones of more than 40,000 people who died in plagues and the Hussite Wars. They also come for the Church of Saint Barbara, one of the main examples of European Gothic architecture. The Italian Court, the oldest monument in town, once housed the royal mint. The Czech Museum of Silver includes the Osel mine, which you can tour underground. A day trip from Prague covers the main sights. An overnight stay gives more time for the centre and Sedlec at a slower pace.

Kutná Hora FAQ
Is Kutná Hora worth visiting from Prague?
Yes, if you want a UNESCO-listed medieval silver town and the Sedlec ossuary in one day. It is a better fit than a castle trip for travelers who like architecture and unusual history, and a worse one if you dislike human remains.
Do you need to book the Sedlec ossuary in advance?
Yes. The site says capacity is limited and tickets are for a specific date and time, sold online or at the Sedlec information center. They are not sold inside the church, so arriving without a ticket risks a long wait or no entry.
How far is Kutná Hora from Prague?
About 80 km east. CzechTourism describes about one hour by train from Prague main station with a change to a local train for the last 3 km, and roughly 1.5 hours by car on the D11. Confirm times on IDOS for your date.
Can you see Kutná Hora in half a day?
Sedlec plus St Barbara fits half a day if you book the ossuary slot early. Adding the Hrádek museum and the mine tour, which lasts about 90 minutes, turns it into a full day.
Is the Sedlec ossuary open during the restoration?
Yes. The parish says the restoration, begun in 2014, will run until at least 2030 and that the site stays open throughout. Scaffolding or limited areas are possible, so read the official page before you go.
