Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, in the South Moravian Region, where the Svitava and Svratka rivers meet. It was the historic capital of Moravia until 1948. The city is also the seat of the country's top courts, including the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, so official business brings many visitors. Two medieval landmarks define the skyline: Špilberk Castle on its hill and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on Petrov hill.

Visitors come for modernist architecture, above all the Villa Tugendhat, a family villa by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe completed in 1930 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Brno also has a strong music and theatre scene, Moravian wine, the Moravian Karst for day hikes, and St. Thomas's Abbey, where Gregor Mendel ran his pea-plant experiments in the 1850s. Vienna is about 110 km south, reached by road or by rail. Summers are warm to hot, and days above 30 °C are fairly common.
