Portobelo is a historic port and village on the Caribbean coast of Panama, in Colón Province. Its deep natural harbor made it one of the main Spanish colonial ports for shipping silver and gold to Spain, and the old walls and forts still show that role. Ruins of colonial forts, including Santiago de la Gloria, San Jerónimo and San Fernando, stand around the town. The fortifications of Portobelo and nearby Fort San Lorenzo were listed by UNESCO in 1980.

The main draws are the forts, the Catholic traditions and the Afro-Congo culture. Each 21 October the Black Christ, a dark-skinned wooden image about 1.60 m tall, is carried through the town on a cross, and more than 160,000 people are said to gather for it, so book beds and transport early for that date. The Congo dance, a tradition from the colonial slave trade era, is still performed. The town is small, so a day trip from Colón or Panama City is possible, but an overnight stay leaves time to walk the ruins without rushing. Colón is about 49 km away by road along the Transisthmian Highway, and Panama City is about 105 km.
